There is a particular kind of confidence that comes from being well prepared.
A bag packed “just in case.”
An extra layer.
A backup plan for the backup plan.
And, if one is especially prudent, a small collection of items that might prove useful in circumstances that have not yet been fully imagined.
It is, I think, a very human instinct.
We like to be ready.
Which is why Jesus’ instructions to his disciples about being sent are, frankly, a little unsettling.
“Take nothing for your journey.”
No bag.
No bread.
No money.
No extra tunic.
Now, this seems… optimistic.
One imagines the disciples glancing at one another, perhaps wondering if they might at least negotiate for a modest snack.
But Jesus is quite clear.
They are to go with less than they would prefer.
And in doing so, they are to discover something more than they expected.
Dependence.
Not a word that tends to inspire immediate enthusiasm.
We prefer independence.
Self-sufficiency.
A quiet confidence that we have everything we need well in hand.
But the life of being sent into all the world does not begin with what we bring.
It begins with what we receive.
The disciples are sent not as self-contained units of spiritual competence, but as people who must rely — on God, on one another, and, quite remarkably, on the kindness of those they meet along the way.
Which means that their journey is not only about what they give.
It is about what they are willing to receive.
And here is where things become particularly interesting.
Because being sent is not simply a matter of going out.
It is also a matter of opening up.
To conversation.
To hospitality.
To the unexpected ways grace appears in the lives of others.
Now, this is not always comfortable.
There is something reassuring about having everything planned, packed, and under control.
There is something far more vulnerable about stepping into a situation where we do not quite know how things will unfold.
And yet, again and again, this is precisely where God works.
Not in our perfect readiness…
…but in our willingness.
Willingness to go.
Willingness to trust.
Willingness to discover that we are not carrying this mission alone.
Which is very good news.
Because if being sent required complete preparation, flawless execution, and a comprehensive supply kit, most of us would still be standing at the door, checking our bags.
Instead, we are invited to begin.
With what we have.
With who we are.
With a trust that grows not from certainty, but from experience.
Experience that the One who sends us is also the One who provides.
Often in ways we did not anticipate.
Often through people we did not expect.
So if today you find yourself wishing you were just a little more prepared before stepping into whatever lies ahead…
Take heart.
You may already have everything you need.
Not because you have planned perfectly…
…but because Christ is with you.
And where He is, there is enough.
More than enough.
Alleluia.
Companion Prayer
Faithful Lord,
You send us into the world
with less than we would choose
and more than we could imagine.
Teach us to trust your provision,
to rely on your presence,
and to walk in faith rather than certainty.
Open our hearts to receive
as well as to give,
and to recognize your grace
in every place we go.
And in all things,
remind us that you are enough.
Amen.
